Pants for me, a rarity...

I don't like wearing pants. There I have said it. I used to adore my Diesel-jeans, I practically lived in them, but they stopped making the model and now they don't have a model that fits me well anymore. I once went shopping for a new pair, long story short, I went to 5 stores, tried on 20 different models and none fit me. That was quite a depressing way to spend the day. After that, I just gave up on wearing jeans... Any one have a favourite brand or model for pear shapes, preferably manufactured in Europe or the US?

Up until last week I had 2 pair of pants I wore regularly, a grey pair and a black stretch jeans. Last week I was squatting down and the fabric of my black pants tore. Now I must admit, this was not the first time this has happened to me. The insides of my thighs rub together and the fabric gets worn out faster in that spot, and thus eventually all jeans tend to tear up sooner or later...

Even though I don't like wearing pants, I do like making them. So I decided I should make a new pair of pants. And as a lucky coincidence, February is Smarty Pants Month at The Monthly Stitch.

I had been eying this pattern for a while and I know that Burda-pants fit me just fine without any alterations. After I saw Rachel's high waisted trousers, I was more and more convinced that this style should come from under my machine and make its' way into my closet...

I love the high waist on these pants, I just love the style. The husband-monster? Not so much. I believe he said he will only go out with me if I pull my shirt over the waistband, but I don't like the way that looks, so he'll just have to live with tucked in shirts...

The pink wool is from my stash and cost me 15€, picked up from a remnants table in Barcelona. Add a zipper to the grand total and I have new wool trousers for about 16€.

 Now construction wise:

Turns out I can sew a pair of pants in one day! Who would have thought? Certainly not me!

As with all Burda patterns, instructions are minimal. One A4-sheet in total...

The welt pockets gave me a bit of a headache. I have never made single welt pockets before, and if I hadn't found this tutorial, both pockets would have ended up a disaster, instead of just the right pocket. I messed up completely and in the end had to sew the whole pocket by hand. Of course after I had slashed the pocket line...  Ugh! The left pocket looks alright.

I didn't go with the invisible zipper but went for a lapped zipper instead, using Sunny's class on Craftsy. Turns out I should have started with the back leg so the lap would go from front to back, but I started with the front leg, and now my zip closes the wrong way. I'm pretty sure no one will notice.

I was very much in doubt, but in the end I went for the splits on the bottom, and I'm really glad I did. It's a fun little feature, and they make my shoes look good. I like the way my trousers fall around my shoes instead of sitting on top of the shoe. Next time I will make the split 2cm shorter so my socks don't show...

I made a size 42, but I think I could have gotten away with a size 40. Guess that will be for next time, when these wear out.

What are your favourite trouser patterns and which one would you recommend me?

  2. Espectacular!

  5. Jean shopping is almost as bad as bathing suit shopping. I live in jeans and the ones that fit are the Jalie 2908. I'm currently trying to find another that I like. My March Challenge patterns are for a new to me pair of jeans. My new to me pattern is also a jeans pattern.
Your trousers look good on you. I might try a high waisted trouser.

  6. These look great! I, too, am not really a pants person... I wear mostly skirts and dresses. I do have one pair of jeans that I like (and that fits) that are from Cookie Johnson. They're made in the US, and they're supposed to be designed for curvier women, but they're definitely not cheap (I bought mine at a consignment store). Making your own is much cheaper, and the fit is probably better anyways!

It turned out awesome! I love pants, I often wear pants, but I have sewn a few pants and never have the fit properly.

  9. You wear this style well. High waisted pants on a great waist like yours is a bonus.
Our shapes are so different I would not dare suggest a pattern for you because I would be way off the mark :)

  10. Te han quedado muy chulos, la tela me gusta mucho. Y no te hagas la ropa tan grande, que hay que lucir algo y tú puedes. Las fotos preciosas.

  11. These are great! I love the high waistband and the slits on the hems. Very fashion forward! What does your husband know really? LOL. I'm almost finished my trousers for the Monthly Stitch challenge!

  12. I love the style of a high waist trouser and they are super flattering! Really great that you could use fabric from your stash. I am dreading sewing the pants cutting out my fabric in about an hour. Wish me luck.

  13. Hola Merche, gracias!

  15. I actually like the fit of the Burda pants on me, I guess I must have a German built... But I hate, hate, hate jeans shopping. Bathing suit shopping not that much, luckily, it would be traumatic, because I live practically next to the beach... I'll keep the Jalie in mind, thanks!

  16. Thanks! I checked out those Cookie Johnsons. I was a bit confused when the first Google-results showed up, Magic Johnson all the way... Turns out Cookie is Magic's wife. the girls in the lookbook all have round hips so I guess these would probably fit me but I'm afraid they're not available in Europe. I'll have to keep my eyes open for these!

  17. Hi Maider, thanks! I love sewing pants, just don't like wearing them... I guess I will have to make my husband more pants...

  18. Thanks! I have fairly long legs but emphasizing this is never a bad thing, I would think... You really should make pants, it's not really that hard at all. If I can do it, I think most people can (just make sure you sew the crotch seams first and then the inner leg seams in one long seam like I did with my leggings and explained in an older post) What can be tricky is the fit. I'm really happy with the fit of the Burda patterns, but the Papercut pants look weird on me... It's a matter of having adjusting skills or finding pants that are designed for your built, I guess.

  20. Gracias Sonia! La siguiente sería un poco más pequeño. Siempre hay que adivinar un poco con los patrones como son, algunas quedan pequeños, algunos grandes. Según mis medidas tenía que coser el 44 y me he ariesgado con el 42, pero puedo bajar mas...

  21. Thanks! I guess not many husbands are wild about this style, while the wives actually like this. They're not really fashion-educated, I guess. But in his defense, he did say I should go with the hem splits. And he went to the Balenciaga museum with me and he actually enjoyed himself and read many of the explanations and took a lot of closer looks!

  22. Thanks! My stash is small, but only contains pieces I love, so when I need something I can always take a look there first.

    Good luck with your pants!
